2008 Psi Iota Xi National Convention Synopsis
The 105th Convention of Psi Iota Xi was held June 20 thru June 22, 2008 at the /Executive Inn and Convention Center Evansville, Indiana. There were 426 members in attendance. Zeta Mu Chapter, Jasper, Indiana, was the hostess chapter. Debbie Stemle, National President, announced the following totals for Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic Contributions for 2007-2008:

• The National Psi Ote of the Year was Jennifer Baltus, Zeta Nu Chapter, Westport, Indiana.
• Father Chris Forler, priest of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, gave the invocation. The welcome to the 104th Convention of Psi Iota Xi was given on behalf of the city of Jasper, Indiana, by Nancy Eckerle, the Executive Director of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce. Bob Whitehouse, Director of Sales for the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau, gave the welcome from the City of Evansville, Indiana.
The Keynote speaker was Mr. Terry Seitz, President of InterComm Group of Jasper, Indiana. Terry is an expert in interpersonal communications.
• Debbie Stemle introduced Ginger Hedinger and Donna Stemle, Co-Chairman of the 105th National Convention. They extended a welcome to National Convention.
• Diana Lamb, National Vice-President, gave the response and thanked Zeta Mu for their welcome to National Convention.
• On Sunday morning, the Memorial Service was conducted by Zeta Gamma Chapter, Fort Branch, Indiana.
• Janice Stagg, National Project Chairman, introduced the representatives of the National Projects: Donna Dole, Executive Director, Hoosier Art Salon; Tim Owens, Deaf Youth Sports Festival; Sandy Stauffer, Michigan State President, Van Riper Lecture Series; Debbie Damon, Evansville Philharmonic; Marcia Hay-McCutcheon, Riley Endowed Professorship; Dr. Richard Miyamoto, Riley Hospital; Nancy Minghetti, ASHA; and Dr. David Kuehn, Carle Foundation, Cleft Palate Long Term Project. Each representative spoke on his/her foundation.
• Janice Stagg announced the completion of the Cleft Palate Long Term Project. Sue Simpson, National Advisor and Project Chairman the initiation year of the project, presented the final payment to Dr. David Kuehn, the project representative.
• Bette Yeager, Past National President, spoke on behalf of the National Memorial Fund. She moved that by the direction of the Past National Presidents, the interest earned on the Psi Iota Xi National Memorial Fund for 2008 and funds from the Past National Presidents’ fund raiser to total $1500.00, be used for the University Dance Scholarship for a deaf dancer at Gallaudet University. Motion carried.
• Delegates voted to fund the following National Projects for the coming year: Gallaudet University Dance Scholarship $1,500.00; American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF) $9,000.00; Hoosier Art Salon $1000.00; Psi Iota Xi, National Literature/Literacy Project $6,000.00; Metropolitan Opera Central Region Auditions $3,000.00; Van Riper Lecture Series $4,000.00; and Deaf Youth Sports Festival, Inc. $4,000.00.
• The State Rotating Project Fund for the year 2009 was awarded to Kentucky.
• Debbie Stemle, National President, announced the
winners of the National Literature/Literacy Project: Northeast – Pi, Fort Wayne, IN; Northwest – Zeta Pi, Highland , IN; East Central –
Zeta Upsilon, IN; West Central – Beta Psi, Delphi, IN; Southeast – Zeta Xi, Madison, IN; Southwest – Gamma Iota, Shoals, IN.
• Sandy Clevenger, PNP, reported on the Elsie I. Sweeney Endowment Fund.
• A motion was made to hold the 2011 Convention on June 24-26, 2011 at the Hyatt in Indianapolis, Indiana by Alpha Omega Chapter, North Vernon, Indiana. The motion carried.
• During lunch, Eta Gamma, Valparaiso, Indiana, presented their invitation to the 2010 National Convention in Merrillville, Indiana. Omega Chapter, Lebanon, Indiana, issued an invitation to the 2009 National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Beta Tau, Frankfort, Indiana, presented their invitation to the 2009 Welcome Party.
